2008 Portland String Quartet Workshop
at Saint Joseph's College: July 20 - August 3
PURPOSE
OF THE WORKSHOP
Since 1975, the Portland String Quartet has directed this
intensive two-week summer session of chamber music study and
performance. The rigorous schedule of rehearsals, coaching
sessions, master classes and concerts is designed to teach
gifted string players the art of ensemble performance. The
Quartet members, experienced teachers as well as internationally
acclaimed performers, offer dynamic direction in a relaxed
and supportive atmosphere. Each year, the workshop participants
(eight string quartets) master major works in the chamber
music literature and present them in public performance at
the culmination of the session. Participants are selected
through audition from throughout the United States and abroad.
Individuals, those not applying as a full quartet, are carefully
placed in compatible ensembles based on musicianship and experience.
